Photography

An important note about photography:

The days when you could get arrested for simply wielding a camera in public have, thankfully, disappeared, though it is still quite common to get hassled by those in ‘authority’ when taking seemingly innocent photographs.

In July 2006, the Interior Minister, Prince Naif, announced that any building where it was prohibited to take photographs should be clearly signed as such. But confusingly, it is still prohibited to photograph anywhere that might be considered ‘strategic’. And most shopping malls still ban photography altogether.

Part of this aversion to photographs is due to the continuing security problems throughout the Middle East; but it is also frowned upon to take photographs anywhere that women may be present.

Certainly you should not take photos of anybody directly without first asking their permission. And if you do intend to take a camera about with you, try to be circumspect at the very least.
